			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>As from 1 October The Agency Workers Regulations came into effect giving temporary staff the same basic rights as permanent staff after 12 weeks in the same employment.  Although this is good news for agency staff in that it is a welcome improvement in working conditions, it does seem to go against the whole idea of the flexibility of using temps and inevitably will lead to higher costs for the employer.  On the other hand, it does provide an opportunity to show the advantages of using freelance staff, who will not incur extra costs for an employer in the form of overtime, breaks, rest periods and holiday pay, to name a few.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Email received yesterday from a company needing VERY URGENT – no need to shout – four calls to be transcribed by the end of the day.  Providing the length of the recording time is far more useful as I can then gauge how long the transcription will take and this also avoids emails going backwards and forwards requesting further information.  Meanwhile, the clock is ticking so, in this instance, as it was VERY URGENT, wouldn’t a phone call have been a much more expeditious means of getting this VERY URGENT typing underway?  Now, where did I leave that crystal ball…?</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I recently revised and typed up a CV for a customer and it served as a reminder of some important points to bear in mind when putting together this document. Nowadays, when competition for jobs is so fierce, your CV must catch the eye of the prospective employer and not end up as another reject. So, in no particular order, some pointers might be:</p>
<p>· Name and contact details at the top of the page, including an email address or mobile phone number, so that the HR Department has no difficulty in contacting you with that all important letter or phone call.</p>
<p>· Include, at the beginning, a 20 to 25-word strap line, which is a brief description of your experience and strengths tailored to the job.</p>
<p>· Keep it brief. Two sides of A4 if possible although, obviously, this cannot always be achieved. </p>
<p>· Choose a style and size of font that is easy to read &#8211; nothing fancy and not typed in upper case. Also use a good quality paper.</p>
<p>· Chronology of employment and education/qualifications should be listed with the most recent at the beginning, as this is more relevant than what you were doing 30 years ago.</p>
<p>· You don’t have to include your date of birth, but your age can be easily worked out by the dates you attended Secondary School, for example.</p>
<p>· Inclusion of interests and hobbies is not compulsory, but it does give an idea of your personality.</p>
<p>· Other information to include could be your state of health, possession of a driving licence, or some detail that is relevant to the job.</p>
<p>· Finally, double-check for any mistakes &#8211; and good luck!</p>

Apart, perhaps, from signing some sort of declaration, it has to be down to those undertaking the work to be discreet, and any sensitive information that they are party to must be treated with confidentiality.</p>
<p>In addition to this, there are simple procedures that can be put in place to keep information safely and confidentially.  This can be merely a password for the computer or one for individual documents requiring their own password protection.  Regular backups of files and up to date virus protection are all good practice when it comes to security of information.  A confidentiality statement by the freelance worker can also be helpful in demonstrating to clients that the issue of confidentiality has been considered and addressed.</p>
<p>Finally, having a dedicated workspace imparts a much more professional impression of a business and encourages routines with fewer distractions.  Working from a kitchen table amongst clutter with very little space is not wise.  As well as the danger of the spilt cup of tea, there is a lack of privacy if the work is being undertaken in a communal part of a house, where confidentiality cannot be maintained. </p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Even the BBC can trip up over the proper use of the apostrophe as witnessed in last week’s episode of <em>Panorama</em> entitled <em>It Shouldn’t Happen at a Vets’</em>.  Watching film of the poor animals in distress was bad enough but the programme also included some captions in which this howler (no pun intended) appeared.  On this occasion, and this seems to be a particular issue, the problem is the use of the apostrophe in <em>its</em> or <em>it’s</em>.  The former is used to show possession, ie its name, its parents, etc, and the latter means simply that the second <em>i </em>has been omitted.  An example of this is it’s going to rain; instead of saying, it is going to rain.  Simple.  So why is there such a problem with apostrophes?  Answers on a postcard, please.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>How many times have you seen poor grammar, spelling or punctuation that left you with a poor impression of a business?  Whether it is merely the garden centre selling fushias or the letter from the bank putting it’s apostrophes in the wrong place, this type of error is becoming far too frequent in today’s written word.   </p>
<p>Since the introduction of personal computers, the role of the secretary or typist nowadays is less vital, and typing is now undertaken by anyone with access to a ‘qwerty’<em> </em>keyboard.  There are many competent two-fingered ‘typists’ producing presentable documents and at reasonable speeds, but in the hands of the experienced secretary, the lengthy report or short letter can be produced with ease and with an eye for accuracy and detail.  When it comes to good presentation, or even the time-consuming production of large documents, these are tasks tackled more efficiently by the fully trained secretary, enabling the hard-pressed manager to get on with their day-to day business.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>A recent report from the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) has shown that employers are recognising again the importance of using agency workers for both short and long term employment, and 86% expect the use of temporary staff to continue or grow in the next three months.  See <a href="http://bit.ly/RECartcl">http://bit.ly/RECartcl</a>.  This is good news for the recruitment industry and also hopefully for freelance workers.</p>
<p>Good quality temporary staff benefit organisations in times of financial instability when many employers may be choosing not to fill vacant posts until the climate improves; however, this can present problems in dealing with the peaks and troughs of everyday workflow as well as staff illness and holidays.  An obvious source of temporary staff is recruitment agencies and employing temps means fewer overheads and less administration for the employer.  This is true of freelancers as well, who can also offer a high quality service but with greater flexibility.  They probably have their own premises to work from with their own equipment and as they charge only for the work actually undertaken, costs will be reasonable.  This is not always true of the agency temp who is usually hired for the day and may be at a loose end by the afternoon tea break.</p>
